After harvesting the track lists of Pebbles and Boulders compilations for their first three singles and debut album, The Chesterfield Kings began to broaden their scope in 1984. The self penned "She Told Me Lies" initiated their break from relying solely on the works of long lost garage bands of the sixties. "Lies" is a robust garage rocker that boasts a magnificent attack of Vox organ, sneering vocals and a cool Yardbirds brand rave-up as a finale. The flip side is a rattlin' version of The Lavender Hour's Texas classic. Flurries of sharp Rickenbacker riffs and propulsive drumming drive it home. A bona-fide two headed monster from the 80s garage revival.

She Told Me Lies is probably my favorite song from Stop ! which is a fantastic album. Great review, thanks !
ReplyDeleteI remember buying this and the Lyres "Help You Ann" 45s the same day. They both spent hours on the turntable for weeks after. Both are still amongst my all time faves. The Chesterfield Kings were at their peak on this single and the "Stop" album.
